“What do you love? What do you live by?”
Unless is the story of young daydreamers, who, in an attempt to escape the drudgery of life, searches for meaning in any story but their own.
Inspired by the novel The Moviegoer by Walker Percy and working collaboratively with the performers, director Liam Karry devised an original two-track, solo audience experience based in the historic Bangkok neighbourhood of Nang Loeng.
The audience arrived at the home of their Aunt Emily (Ban Chao Phraya Thammasakmontri) where a party was underway. One by one they were pulled aside and given a note from their aunt, urging them to find their cousin. Each audience member was cast in the role of Binx or Kit as they explored alleyways, markets, artist studios, karaoke bars, and memories of childhood friendships.
The experience encouraged the audience to question what happens when they break out of their everyday routine and launch themselves on a quest in search of meaning.
Unless was produced in partnership with Bangkok 1899, a cultural and civic hub, and Matdot art centre.
