COLLIDER is a devised, physical theatre project that will explore performance and storytelling in virtual reality.

Our development process will borrow from physical theatre, game design and immersive theatre practices. We will focus on four research areas: the avatar as mask, the VR chorus, scale, quaternion and transformation in virtual space and audience configuration and immersion.

Devising around these topics, we will build a series of “gyms” showcasing our discoveries which will culminate in a workshop performance.

All rehearsals and performances will take place in virtual reality on the AltspaceVR platform.

We are looking for physical theatre performers, movers, dancers, folks with experience in devised theatre and those who are interested in game design, gaming and emergent technologies from across Canada.

We will provide performers with VR headsets and an orientation to AltSpaceVR. Performers are welcome to use their own headset, provided it is compatible with that of the company. Performers will need a stable Wi-Fi connection and minimum 6 x 6 ft space to rehearse in.

This will be a part-time rehearsal process, scheduled to accommodate those practicing in multiple time zones. Performers will be compensated via honoraria.

Submissions:

Please include a cover letter outlining your interest and experience in physical theatre, devised theatre, emergent technologies and/or game design.

Please submit your headshot and resume as a single PDF file.

Send your submission to audition@singlethread.ca with your name and “Collider Submission” in the subject line.

Successful applicants will be invited to audition over Zoom

Single Thread profiled in book on theatres of the real

Single Thread is proud to be contributing to shaping best practice in innovative staging in Canada.

Single Thread’s 2007 production of Everyman appears in Jenn Stephenson’s recent book Insecurity: Perils and Products of Theatres of the Real.

The book reflects on the early years of the twenty-first century that have witnessed a proliferation of non-fiction, reality-based performance genres, including documentary and verbatim theatre, site-specific theatre, autobiographical theatre, and immersive theatre. Contemporary audiences are caught between a desire for authenticity and immediacy of connection to a person, place, or experience, and the conditions of our postmodern world that render our lives insecure.

Jenn Stephenson is Professor in the Dan School of Drama and Music at Queen’s University and the Editor-in-Chief of the Canadian Theatre Review.
